PK Gaming is Dead + Skyward Sword Review

So unfortunately, this blog hasn't been kept up. I really thought this would be something that would go on for a while. We almost had it going for a year, but then... well, I don't know what happened. Whether we were all too busy with school/work or if we just lost interest.

Anyway, most of what I and the others post about games will be on the Negative World forum from now on.

So, here's one last thing for those of you who follow us, if there are any of you left.

This is my review of Skyward Sword, which is my first ever video review:

You can visit the topic about it at Negative World here.

My Gaming History

I posted this video yesterday morning on youtube. It's an overview of my gaming history and discusses a few of the games I played when I was young as well as where I am now as a gamer.

I also started a discussion about it on Negative World asking other people what their gaming history was like. Go check it out!

The Negative World Podcast

Well, I've been thinking over the past couple of weeks, and I've decided that PK Gaming is going to stop the podcast for now, and instead, plug the podcast of our good friends over at Negative World, since we're pretty much related to the place due to most of the active editors here are from there, including me.

The latest podcast was their 10th episode, and it has been a blast participating in it. I have been on four of the episodes, DrFinkelstein has been on two, and Mr. Saturn has been on one. That's part of the reason I wanted to start plugging it, since PK Gaming editors are part of the podcast anyway.

Here is a link to the 10th podcast, you can listen to it directly there, or download it:

Negative World Topic

I'll be changing the podcasts page to feature the Negative World podcast with a link to their blogger and a link to subscribe.

I'm not sure if we'll ever do the PK Gaming podcast again, so I'm suspending it until further notice. The Negative World podcast just seems to be the place for us right now, so I'll be plugging that from now on and posting when they have a new episode up.

So yeah... take a listen.

Games I want on the Virtual Console, Vol. 1

So... I've been pretty obsessed with digital distribution lately, especially considering Nintendo's Virtual Console*, so I thought I would cook up a new article series about games that have yet to show their face on the service.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a game published by Nintendo that still hasn't shown it's face on the Virtual Console. I honestly thought it would've shown up by now, at least before Yoshi's Story did, but nope. I have owned this game both back when I had an SNES as a kid and the port to the GBA as a teenager, but I'm craving to play it again, and this time I won't be able to fall back to my bad habit of selling games if I get it on the Virtual Console. Yoshi's Island is a cutesy game, but its looks doesn't detract from its excellent gameplay and the 'just right' challenge of difficulty.
Terranigma actually never came out here in the states or Canada, but it would be an excellent game to release on the virtual console so those of us in North America can enjoy it. I watched a review of it on 16-bit gems and it piqued my interest. I feel like I should play more Action RPGs, and this one would probably satisfy my curiosity for the genre.
Another action RPG, but a little more well-known, though not by much. Secret of Evermore is Secret of Mana's less popular little brother. This was also reviewed by 16-bit gems, but that's not why I became curious about it. I first saw this game in a retro game shop and the cover art on the cartridge really interested me. As I read up about the story, my curiosity only grew more. I hope that square enix will decide to release this gem on the VC eventually.
Treasure is no stranger to putting up their games on the virtual console, even import games like Alien Soldier and Sin & Punishment (though that was partly Nintendo's doing). This, however, was one of the few N64 games they worked on, and it's a bit of a cult classic. I've watched gameplay on youtube of this game and I would love to play it. It would also add to the lacking variety of N64 games on the Virtual Console right now...
You know this was coming. I've played Earthbound, most everyone here at PK Gaming has. I do not own a cartridge or anything, so I had to play it on *gasp*, an emulator. I wouldn't mind actually owning it on the Virtual Console though. Again, Roo explains why Nintendo might not have put it up on the VC just yet in his review. Though... I'm not buying the explanation really, I think Nintendo is just holding out on us. Why else would they keep Yoshi's Island back for this long? I'm suspecting that they're afraid they'll run out of games to release in the future so they're spacing them out very sparingly... but the Wii has already had a great run and its successor is just over the horizon... so what are they waiting for? Do they just want to keep those other unreleased VC games for the launch of the successor? *shrugs* Who knows.

Anyway, those are my first five games that I wish will make it to the Virtual Console sometime soon. I'll do another article about this again sometime soon once I think of more games. While waiting for that, why don't you readers tell me a game that you have been wanting on the virtual console?

*Comments about 'just play it on an emulator' will be ignored and eaten. I have been discussing this with people for quite a while and I feel that it may make a good debate topic in one of the upcoming podcasts, either here or on one of Negative World's podcasts.

PK Gaming Podcast: Episode 3 Part 1

Well, we finally recorded our third podcast this past weekend, with me, your host, Paleo, and starring Ink, our new editor Mr. Saturn (he's added later in the podcast runtime), and special guest Pandareus from the Negative World forums. The podcast isn't happening quite as often as I'd like it to, which is apparent how I feel when we start talking about the blog and the other podcast I've been in. Hopefully, since the college semester is coming to a close, maybe we won't have these huge gaps like this over late spring and summer.

By the way, if you listeners have any option where we can archive our podcasts, please tell us. Right now we're just using sendspace and the unfortunate thing with that is the fact that our files will be deleted after a certain period. (We still have the podcasts, we just need a place to store them indefinitely.)

If you have any questions about the podcast or the site in general, please e-mail us at PKGamingPodcast@gmail.com.

Off Topic: A personal note and new blog

If you visited the blog tonight, you might have noticed that I made a new links box on the upper right corner of the page. Under it is the Negative World forums that Dr. Fink and I frequent, and another blog... but what is it?

Well... back when I created this blog last September... which... seems so long ago now, I had intentions to create another blog along with it, one that would get myself motivated for my future. Like it says in my blurb in the about us page, I'm an aspiring marine biologist and I mustn't forget that. I do love gaming, possibly more than a lot of other people, but I also love the ocean... again, possibly more than others. Managing these two major interests can be quite difficult though, and it was my original intention to create two blogs that complemented each other: one about science, and the other about gaming/technology.

I wanted to keep this short, so I'll stop myself before I start rambling. Basically, the new blog is something to keep me focused on the more practical goals I have in life, but that's not to say I won't still post here often. If you'd like to check out the new blog, click the link right over there in the upper right corner or... click this caption under the picture of the beautiful animal I named the new blog after:

Mega Man Haikus

Recently, over at the fantastic Negative World forums, there was a holiday contest by the owner of the site, Zero. He asked the users to create haikus based on Mega Man bosses. He was to judge them and the top three would win a WiiWare game from him. Many entered with great entries and as a user of those forums myself, I wanted to display some of my personal favorites. I entered too but with a lackluster entry. I was so busy the past few weeks I completely forgot to put a legitimate try out there. Oh well. There were no lack of great entries and I encourage anyone who loves video games, Nintendo especially, to go sign up at the Negative World forums. It's a great group, especially if your favorite forums have died out over the past few years.

A haiku of course for those who don't know is a kind of poem which is comprised of three lines. The first and last lines are five syllables long and the second line is seven syllables long. Now, enjoy the haikus.

So what did you all think of the entries? Have any of your own? Think you can do better? Notice I didn't add mine? There's a reason for that. Aw hell, I'll do it. Again, I didn't aim high with this one.
