Flash Friday: Soul Brother

Ink here, filling in for Paleo for this week's Flash Friday and hoping to reboot it.

Today's flash game is Soul Brother. It's a very cute Metroidvania about taking over bodies and using their deaths to further your quest to redeem your soul. There's only a few rooms and a handful of collectables compared to other Metroidvanias, but the cute pixelated art style and unique gameplay mechanics make this short adventure worth it.

Flash Friday Temporarily Suspended

(This isn't an April Fool's joke, it really is suspended.)

I usually don't have trouble with finding Flash games. I sometimes have trouble finding Flash games to present on Friday. The main reason I created this feature was to have something weekly on the site, and it helped me come up with other ideas for weekly articles. Unfortunately, this feature, unlike the other ones, had a bit of limited number of articles I could make due to the amount of "good" Flash games I have encountered. There are a lot more Flash games out there yes... but... who am I kidding, I'm lazy, I feel this might be a time to reflect on what I've presented so far, and may give me time to find some more Flash games to feature in the near future.

There have been 20 Flash Fridays so far, here is a list of links to each one, ordered from when they were posted:

11/12/10: Upgrade Complete!
11/19/10: Dino Run
11/26/10: Achievement Unlocked
12/3/10: Ant Buster
12/10/10: One Chance
12/17/10: Tower of Heaven
12/24/10: Mountain Maniac
12/31/10: Miami/Sydney Shark
1/7/11: Dolphin Olympics
1/14/11: Infectonator World Dominator
1/21/11: Small Worlds
1/28/11: Exctinct! Are you smarter than a plant?
2/4/11: Realm of the Mad God
2/11/11: Covetous
2/18/11: Meat Boy
2/25/11: The Majesty of Colors
3/4/11: How to Raise a Dragon
3/11/11: Robot Dinosaurs That Shoot Beams When They Roar
3/18/11: I Love Traffic
3/25/11: Icycle

I hope you have all enjoyed what I've shared with you so far. I'm not sure when I'll start up Flash Friday again, but it won't be suspended for more than a month at least. I just need some time to play more Flash games.

Flash Friday: Icycle

This is a very beautifully animated game, it has a great style. The premise is that you were transported to the future somehow, and now you're naked and stuck with a bicycle to get around. It seems like that the world has come to an end and everything is frozen. You must get through the levels riding your bicycle and avoid obstacles while following the path of soap bubbles that lead you in the right direction. The first few levels are easy, but it gets a bit challenging on the later half.

Flash Friday: I Love Traffic

I love traffic.

Well, not really, only when I'm the one directing it. It can be fun then, and that's what today's game is about!

I Love Traffic

The object of the game is simple: just click on the traffic lights to let the cars pass when the road is clear. Be careful not to cause an accident or let traffic back up too much though! There's 20 levels, and it can be completed in a short time, but it's pretty entertaining. It also gives you random facts after completing each level. Why? I'm not sure, but it was a nice touch.

Flash Friday: How to Raise a Dragon

Today's Flash is from the same creator that was featured last week, Gregory Weir.

How to Raise a Dragon

The game has you controlling a dragon as a newborn, adolescent, and adult. It depends on what kind of dragon you become by what you eat and how you decide to interact with humans. Like so many of the games I share, this one has multiple endings. The 'endings' tell you what kind of dragon you are now and what the humans think of you (you do have control over that as well.) Try playing it multiple times, it's very interesting!

Flash Friday: The Majesty of Colors

This week's game is pretty strange, you take control of a giant tentacle creature under the ocean.

Like with Covetous and One Chance, there are multiple endings to this, it's up to your own curiosity to find all the endings.

Flash Friday: Meat Boy

I'm starting to run out of flash games to post... well, the ones that I can remember playing anyway, and that means I'll have to go hunting for more to post in future flash fridays!

Anyway, today's game is Meat Boy, the prototype flash game to Super Meat Boy. I'm not sure how it compares to the indie game hit, but it is definitely a challenging platformer.

Meat Boy

Tip: If all else fails, you can always rage quit

(That's what I did...)

Flash Friday: Covetous

You really... don't want to play this.

Or maybe you do just out of sheer curiosity. It's not scary or anything... it's just... very morbid, for a game that's done in an 8-bit style. I'm afraid I can't give away many details because I don't really want to spoil the game since it's so short, I will tell you this though, there are two endings.

Covetous

Tell me how you feel after playing it.

Flash Friday: Realm of the Mad God

Oh man, do I have an exciting game for you guys this Friday. Have you ever wanted to play an MMO, but just don't have the time or the patience for one? Well, this game is for you! It takes the basic goals of an MMO: defeating enemies, looting, going through dungeons, and defeating large powerful enemies... and puts it all into one very fast and streamlined game. And best of all about this game, that it's an actual MMO! So you can invite your friends to join you for short bursts of playtime. The only downside is that once you die, your character is dead. But don't worry, it's not very hard to level up another character, since the game levels you up so quickly. Your character is also automatically saved if you exit out of the game without dying.

Flash Friday: Extinct! Are you smarter than a plant?

Since I just started learning about plant life in my Biology 2 course at the college, I thought it would be appropriate to share this game on Flash Friday. My significant other actually showed me this...

Extinct!

The object of the game is to grow and disperse enough of your offspring (seeds) so that your species will survive. Sounds easy, right? Well, there are a lot of things you have to consider, such as how many minerals and sugar the plant gets, and how tall the plant should be so it can get enough sunlight. Insects will also visit your plants, some will pollinate like the bees, which is what you want, and some will destroy your leaves! At the end of the game, you're given a percentage of the chance that your species will survive. I got 37% the first time around, and 28% the second time. I'm an endangered species!

Flash Friday: Small Worlds

Well, since I did my Top 10 Games of 2010 last weekend, I figured I would post one of my favorite Flash games that I played last year, though... I think it was actually published in 2009.

Small Worlds

Small Worlds was also mentioned in my Gameplay Concepts: Exploration article.

Flash Friday: Infectonator World Dominator

Man, it's been a busy and/or lazy week (in the case of me) for us here at PK Gaming. Hopefully the rest of January won't have our posts quite as scattered.

I have a great Flash game for you today though that will take a big chunk of your time if you're bored.

Infectonator World Dominator

It's a sim type game where you are trying to infect towns and cities by making them zombies and eventually destroy them and infect the entire countries that they're in.

Flash Friday: Dolphin Olympics

I'm still dreaming of Spring and with that I'm dreaming of seeing my precious dolphins again.

How about enjoy the carefree life of a dolphin by trying to reach the heavens with every leap in Dolphin Olympics?

Dolphin Olympics 2 is the superior game, but I thought I would link to both just for the heck of it.

Flash Friday: Miami/Sydney Shark

Well, it's the last Flash Friday of the year, and the last day of the year, how convenient!

After Christmas last Saturday, we had a foot of snow fall here in North Carolina, and while it's nice to see since it's a rarity in my area... I'm getting a bit sick of it, and dreaming of spring and summer.

And what better way to dream of spring and summer than pretending to be a vicious man-eating shark causing terror in a major coastal city!

This is Miami Shark.

And for those of you in the southern hemisphere, where it's already summer, here is Sydney Shark.

Flash Friday: Mountain Maniac

You didn't think I would forget Flash Friday because of Christmas Eve did you?

Well, today's Flash game is another by Pixel Jam, the same developer that made Dino Run.

This is Mountain Maniac.

You're a raging mountain man that's mad as hell and can't take it anymore, so, like any raging mountain man, he takes it out on the town by using his hammer to dislodge boulders that destroy anything in it's path. Sounds fun, right? It's basically like a really large game of plinko, but you do have control over the direction the boulders will fall.

Why did I choose this game for today? Well, there's a Christmas-themed version! It seems the mountain man took a job as a mall Santa, but he's had enough of it! Take out all your holiday rage on Christmas eve with this fun little flash game!

Flash Friday: Tower of Heaven

Since another article of mine today was about a demake made to look like a Game Boy game... I figured I would share a Flash game that's made to look like one. Tower of Heaven is a platformer that gets more difficult with each level due to this God that gives you rules to follow such as, "Thou Shalt Not Walk Left" and if you don't follow the rules, you will be smitten. It may seem very difficult to follow the rule I just stated when you have a saw-blade heading towards you from the right and no way to jump over it in a small corridor. Though there is always a way to get past each level.

Flash Friday: One Chance

What would you do if all life on Earth was going to die within a week? Well, find out in this very short flash game called 'One Chance.' There are multiple endings, so you can play it over again many time if you'd like to see them all.

Flash Friday: Ant Buster

I love Tower Defense games, and this little flash game is a good example of one.

You make cannons to protect your picnic cake from being taken away by ants! I've actually found myself playing this one for a few hours trying to get the highest score possible... killing hundreds of ants... does that make me a bad person?

Flash Friday: Achievement Unlocked

I've actually got two for you today!

Achievement Unlocked

and

Achievement Unlocked 2

If you're like me, you love gathering achievements so you can brag against your friends about how many you have... and then one day you realize that they're completely pointless, but as the first screen of the game says, 'Don't worry, metagaming is all that matters.'
